Needless to say, spam is a major issue for most internet users. Since the advent of email, spammers have found it to be a suitable medium to promote their products and services. Spam has evolved from consisting of harmless advertisements to becoming a carrier of dangerous viruses and other applications that can damage your computer. These junk emails are also known to cause identity theft wherein a user’s personal details are hijacked by the spammers through devious means.
With the proliferation of spam there has been the invention of a number of ways to combat the problem. There are anti spam applications, blocks, filters and a host of other ways you can curb this growing menace. However, in spite of there being many methods for spam control, the problem still persists. Some alarming spam statistics are given here:
- According to a recent survey, spam totals around 14.5 billion messages everyday. This means most of the mails that you receive everyday in your inbox are junk mails.
- Spam makes up almost 80% of emails being sent everyday.
- Geographically, the United States is the biggest generator of spam. This is followed by Korea, who is the second biggest contributor of spam mails worldwide.
- The most common type of spam mail is advertising emails that make up close to 35% of all spam mails. Adult related mails make up 30% of the spam messages. And finally, financially related mails that up 15% of all junk emails.
- Identity theft, also known as phishing scams, account for 73% of spam emails that are being sent everyday.
- Surveys have also confirmed that internet users have lost confidence in email communications thanks to widespread spam. Almost 50% of the people interviewed said that they do not trust email communications anymore.
- Spam has affected corporations in a major way as well. 52% of the companies that have been interviewed reported that bringing down spam was their topmost priority.
- Spam causes huge financial losses to corporations. According to a study, businesses lose around $20.5 billion annually due to the menace of spam.
- According to predictions, in the next four to five years, 58 billion spam emails would be sent everyday to internet users’ world wide.
- Corporations will $198 billion annually if the problem of spam still persists.
These statistics are a pointer to the huge problem posed by spam. However, businesses, governments, and individuals are increasingly getting united in the fight against spam and the future doesn’t look very bright for spammers.
