Spam is a growing concern for every internet user. You must have at one time or another experienced a swamped inbox, filled to the brim with emails from unknown senders. It is not only irritating to open the messages and delete them one by one, but it is also frustrating remembering that they eat up a large amount of disk space. Furthermore, many spam emails carry viruses that can cause substantial damage to your computer. Businesses have to spend billions of dollars every year to rectify the harm caused by viruses that are brought about by spam mails.
Out of every ten emails that you receive everyday, 8 are bound to be spam emails. It is estimated that 85% of all emails sent worldwide are spam emails. Spammers use email as it is a fast and simple way to reach a large number of potential customers. They collect email addresses from web pages, add them to their mailing list and proceed to spam them. Spammers employ the use of automated tools to find email addresses on the web. They also use different methods to craft email addresses and then send junk mails to them.
There are, however, a number of anti-spam applications which can be used to counter the problem of spam. These include using spam blockers and spam filters to check every email before it is downloaded to your computer. Investing in anti-spam technology is a practical and smart move that all internet users should take. It is a great way to prevent problems rather than spending a lot of money to repair them later down the line.
There are certain words that are widely found in spam emails. Spam filters or blockers are pre-trained to detect such words and subsequently block and emails which contain them. Some of the most commonly found words in most spam emails include:
- guaranteed
- free
- no risk
- insurance
- make money online
- stocks
- pornographic words such as sex, body parts, enhancement
- Different sales words such as buy, click here, download here, etc.
At times, there are legitimate emails that contain such words and phrases. These emails are blocked by most spam filters unintentionally. To avoid this, filters should be configured by users to allow for specific emails containing such words and phrases. The names of the sources can be added to the mailing list of the recipient which will stop the emails from being flagged as spam.
