Over the years, spam has grown to become an extensive problem. In 2006, 55 billion spam messages were sent out to unsuspecting internet users on a daily basis. The year previous to that it was 25 million. In 2007, there were nearly 100 billion spam messages being sent out every 24 hours. The number has increased by leaps and bounds since then, and will continue to do so until brute action is taken. The number of email users too has increased.
Some spam emails arrive accompanied by a virus, one ready to infect hundreds of thousands of other computers by leeching off the resources of an unsuspecting owner’s own computer. While this was not a major issue at one point in time, it has grown to be a tremendous nuisance and as of 2006 80% of spam email originate from such activity. This is a favorite technique to most spammers as it requires minimal resources on their part. Their simply turn other computers into “zombies” that can carry out their mischief. This also keeps law enforcement agencies at bay as it is quite difficult to find out the initial origin of these messages.
From the perspective of a single individual with multiple emails addresses, the number of junk mails that he/she receives has increased manifold. From around 500 spam emails that he/he used to get in 2003 it has now increased to one thousand spammy emails everyday, averaging up to 400 junk emails per email address in 24 hours. This is ample proof of how the spam problem is spreading its tentacles.
Spam content has too evolved over the years. In 2003, spam was just an annoying email asking you to buy a product. These days spam contains URLs of websites which when clicked launch malicious programming code that infects your computer. Spam is the easiest way for viruses to spread. Spam costs corporations and US ISPs billions of dollars in revenue each and every year.
Spam emails have grown sophisticated over the years and have more malicious intentions. Spammers get your addresses from orders you’ve placed online or other online interactions you’ve had where a form input was involved. It is always advisable that you don’t open emails from unknown senders and that you do not open links from what appear to be spammy emails. Law enforcement agencies have been up on arms against spammers and have prosecuted a number of spammers. However there is lot that remains to be done to put a check on spamming activities.
