How the CAPTCHA changed spam

While the internet facilitates quick communication it is not without its share of problems. The menace of spam is widespread and every internet user has to encounter it. According to reports, almost 85% of the emails that are sent out everyday are spam. Spam emails not only clog up virtual space; they are also carriers of viruses and other malicious programs that cause huge losses to the tune of billions of dollars each year.

CAPTCHA stands for 'Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.'. These are basically tests that need be undertaken while sending emails or documents. There are a number of CAPTCHA configurations. The most common ones are those that contain a mixture of alphabetical letters as well as numbers. Lines and weird shapes may be drawn between them to obscure they appearance. The letters that are there are not written straight and it takes a few moments for the users to find out what those are and then key in the right words and numbers. While this test might seem unnecessary it is a powerful tool to control spam.

Computers are equipped with the intelligence to grade these tests. This helps the computer determine whether a particular user is a bot or human. Only humans are able to enter whatever is written in the prompt box. Therefore emails get sent only when the numbers and letters have been entered correctly. Since spamming is a persistent problem, CAPTCHA has become a necessity. It is an effective way to control spam.

CAPTCHA also ensures that online accounts cannot be created unless the user identifies the letters that are shown in the image. This frustrates the attempts of automated sign up tools that are used by spammers. While humans can read the distorted texts, computer programs are unable to do so. CAPTCHA systems are also found in blogs, which only allow humans to enter comments. CAPTCHA is used to ensure that bots do not enter a website and find the email addresses that are there and then spam those.

If you need protection against spam, a CAPTCHA system is one of the best solutions that are available.
