How to spot blog spam?

Spam is a widespread problem on the world wide web. There is hardly any area that spammers have left untouched. They have not only spammed email addresses but have also spread to websites and blogs. Blogging is increasingly becoming a popular way to market your products and services via the internet. There are many businesses that are resorting to blogs in an effort to sell themselves. Spammers have seized this opportunity to get their message across and cause harm. Spam blogs are becoming common on the internet, and are predominantly used by spammers to boost sites upwards in search engine rankings.

It is unusual for users to post comments on other sites using a handler other than their actual name. Spammers are known for leaving comments containing specific anchor text, in an effort to escalate their search engine rankings. Any kind of comment that displays hyperlinks is usually left by a spammer. These links invite you to view sites that promise to be similar to the one that you are viewing. Adding links to spam blogs help increase search engine rankings, and thus residual profits. This increase in ranking leads to the commercial site getting listed ahead of the other sites during certain searches. This increases the number of the visitors as well as paying customers.

Blog spam is quite easy to identify. Most spammers leave comments on blog posts that are irrelevant or otherwise swarmed with other spam comments. There “contribution” to the blog usually consists of a small two or three word comment. The majority of comments that embody such characteristics are almost always spam. The best way to stop spam is to simply block certain words from posts. A lot of spam can be prevented by simply banning names of some popular pharmaceuticals and casino games. This is an effective solution in the long run. Another way spam can be blocked is by asking for validation before allowing for the publishing of comments. This verifies whether the comments are being submitted by a real human being or by a spam bot. This is a test that a human being can easily pass. However, most automated tools cannot get past this obstacle.

There is also the CAPTCHA technique that is very helpful in preventing spam from infiltrating your blog. There is a combination of letters and numbers that need to be entered in the reply form so as to pass a test. The characters are generally distorted so that spam bots are not able to successful parse the text. Thus, only a human will be able to enter the characters properly. These techniques go a long way towards preventing the spread of spam on the internet.
