Spam in YouTube

Spammers are always finding innovative means to spread spam. No longer is spam limited to emails. They have spread their tentacles to blogs and also to sites that are visited by millions of people everyday. YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the internet. With millions of videos, members, and comments on the site, it has become an easy target for the spammers. Although YouTube has taken great strides in attempting to combat spam, visitors need understand that the site will never be fully spam-proof. Spammers are constantly working on ways to beat the system. Although YouTube engineers have made substantial gains, they still require the help of YouTube members to fight spam.

Spammers have long targeted the comments section of videos where YouTube members leave insightful comments. Frequently viewed videos have a large number of people who read comments. When spammers put up a few spammy links in the comments section, they are sure to get some traffic. Many of these links spread worms that can cause a great deal of damage to member computers. Just by clicking on the spammy links the user is allowing his browser as well as other applications to be exploited.

The links also invite the user to view other videos which are actually spam videos. The link looks like as if it is another YouTube link, however, it is not instead redirects the user to a malicious download. The links directs them to a site that downloads malware the moment it is clicked. Visitors are asked to download software to view the video and it is at this point that the malware is transferred to the user’s computer, albeit, in a deceiving manner. It is thus of paramount importance that you remain on guard while clicking on any links in the comments section of YouTube.

YouTube is taking preventive measures to try and halt the spread of spam on the site. Considering the fact that it is used so widely, YouTube is doing a fine job in attempting to stop the proliferation of spam on the site. Spammy comments found in the video section can now be marked as spam and can also be deleted. There is a button that you can click to report spam. You can mark somebody’s comment as spam as well. This goes a long way in warning other visitors of questionable links.

Spammers will continue to use different tactics to dupe people. However if we exercise caution and are careful while following links on YouTube and other similar sites, we can avoid a lot of hassle.
