5 things you must not do while dealing with spam

Today, everybody who uses the internet is aware of spam. Spam emails contain anything from adult content to get-rich-quick schemes. It has become a widespread problem that clogs the internet with billions of useless emails everyday. Spam is a major irritant to every email account holder and has caused huge losses in the corporate world.

There are certain things that you must avoid while dealing with spam.
  • 1. One of the first things that you should not do upon receiving a suspicious email is to open it. Spam emails generally have catchy words in the subject line and generally promise something that sounds too good to be true. It is always advised that you do not open such mails at all.
  • 2. In the early days of the internet, very few people were aware of spam emails. Most users fell victim to the lure of the emails and even replied to them. This is one of the things that you should not do with a spam email. This will only confirm your email address as an active one to the spammer, and you can rest assured that you will be flooded with more annoying and wasteful emails in the future.
  • 3. Another mistake that many users make is to give out personal details - addresses, phone numbers, and bank details – on webpages linked to in spam messages. Some messages request a reply with recipient’s personal information outright. This is one sure way of spurring trouble. It is never a wise idea to dole out information in these emails. Also, beware of phishing scams wherein you receive emails that appear to have been distributed by a legitimate company. It is recommended that you log in to the company's actual website to look for details pertaining to the email before filling out any sort of information. Be sure to check the company’s privacy policy as well.
  • 4. When you get any spam emails it is best to report them instead of outright deleting them. This will save the other users from being spammed from the same sender.
  • 5. Also, if spam is a persistent problem in your online experience, you can use filters to segregate the emails that come to your account into legitimate and junk folders. This will prevent you from being harassed by the junk emails.

These steps, when followed, will ensure that you are able to deal with spam effectively.
