Blacklists, white lists and why you should have them

To any internet user, the proliferation of spam in the virtual world is a thing of disgust. Spam has discouraged a countless number of people from ever stepping foot in the online world again. It makes using email a pain. However, instead of abandoning aspirations of a pleasant internet experience, you can employ some methods to block all your unwanted spam. This will save you the hassle caused by these intruders. Blacklists and white lists are an effective way to combat the problem. They will save you a lot of time and effort.

Most corporations have a balcklist-whitelist filter wherein the whitelist lists all approved email addresses while the blacklist consists of email addresses suspected to be sending spam. Using this filter ensures that you receive messages from approved senders only. Apart from this, any message from the blacklisted senders will be blocked. A whitelist is an email address book. If the sender's name is not included in the whitelist, the emails will not get delivered to the inbox of the user. Blacklists consist of a database of open relay mail servers as well as those that are known to send spam emails. The lists are used to filter emails coming from known spam sources. DNS blacklists contain lists of IPS and domains that create spam. Most of the anti spam programs utilized by corporations use the lists to stop spam from invading their emails.

The drawback of this kind of filter is that at times the whole IP is considered to be a spam sender, which might not be the case (as only a part may have been used to send junk emails). If you are engaged in any online business, you might find that most of your marketing-oriented emails might not get delivered and you might not even become aware of the problem for some time. One of the main reasons why this is happening is that your domain or IP may have been blacklisted. Someone might have blacklisted your domain or IP after receiving spammy messages. However, domains and IP addresses can be malciously added to blacklists. All ISPs now check for blacklists and refuse to deliver mails that come from an IP which is blacklisted. This is a major disadvantage of the lists. Otherwise the black lists and white lists make for an effective way to tackle the problem of spam.
