If you are an internet user, you must be used to the large number of spam emails flooding your inbox every day. It is an annoying and a regular problem for most of us. You might wonder where the spammers found your email address in the first place. Now that shouldn’t be too difficult to determine. Think of all the mailing lists that you must have joined or the online programs that you might have signed up for. It also might be that you left your email address in some online public forums or bulletins. Spammers are experts at finding email addresses that are present in any web page. Once they find an email, they then add the address to their mailing list and start spamming away.
There are some simple tools that you can use to protect your email id from spammers.
- 1. It is important that you be careful when leaving your email address anywhere on the world wide web. You can write your email address as myusername (at) domainname (dot) com. This will ensure that your email address escapes spam bots. Some spam bots are becoming more sophisticated. Thus, this technique will eventually wear off in effectiveness.
- 2. Another way to avoid spam is to never reply to the junk mails that you receive in your inbox. When you reply to a spammer it just confirms your email address to the spammer. The best course of action is to never open an email that is from an unknown sender and looks suspicious.
- 3. Also, while you are signing up for any online program, it is best to check the privacy policy of the particular company. Most companies have it mentioned clearly in their privacy policy that they will not sell your email address to a third party. If they ensure your online privacy then you are secure from spam emails.
- 4. All the major email providers have filtering facilities. There is likely a "report spam" option at the top of every email you receive. If there are emails in your inbox that look like spam, click on the “report spam” tab and emails from that address will never be included in your inbox again.
These simple steps go a long way in securing your email address from spammers. While spam email might not stop altogether, they will reduce in quantity and allow for more efficient email use.
