Unsolicited commercial e-mail has really gone rampant over the past few years – nobody can deny this. Of course anti spam software and spam filters were quickly developed, but most were too costly for the average computer user. And that is exactly why free anti-spam software was so well-received amongst the general public. However, just like with everything else, free anti-spam software does have its pros and cons.
Pros
- The biggest and most obvious perk to free anti-spam software is of course the price – you simply can’t beat it!
- Because many free anti-spam software suites are open-source projects, updates can be made available to their users much quicker than some of the big software companies can provide them. While big software companies depend on their in-house staff for updates, free anti-spam software that is open source can be updated by an entire community of developers that aren’t worried about holidays or weekends.
Cons
- With so many companies filing for bankruptcy, you can never be sure that your favorite free anti spam solutions are going to functional from one day to the next, or that you will receive updates in the future. And as any regular computer user can tell you, having anti-spam software without keeping it up-to-date is pretty much useless.
- You must be able to trust a company before installing their software, and on the World Wide Web you can’t always be sure that you are getting what you’re paying for; even if you haven’t paid anything for it. |
