Blogs are easy to set up and are also a popular way to get your message across to the world. There are a number of people who are increasingly taking to blogging to promote their products and services. However, most bloggers are unaware of the dangers which spam can pose in their blogging activities and are thus uneducated about the many spam prevention tools which exists for an array of different blogging platforms.
First of all, putting up your email address in your blog for people to contact you is an open invitation to spammers. The best way to let your readers get in touch with you is to use the submission form. This way your email address does not get displayed and your readers are also able to contact you. There are certain steps that you can follow to ensure that your Wordpress blog is always in good standing and is ready for the visitors.
There are basically two hawker activities that might affect most of site owners.
- 1. If your site publishes in HTML, a spammer can gain access to the web hosting control panel and upload spammy links concealed in hidden text. While readers would not be able to see it this, search engines would and would likely be motivated to de list your entire site or merely the infringing pages. This can be avoided by changing the file permissions over to "read only" mode and changing them to “edit” mode only when changes are required.
- 2. In a Wordpress blog it is important that you disable the facility where blog users can register themselves. In "settings," there is an option that asks blog owners whether or not they want visitors to be given the capability to register; it is advisable that you untick this. Also, untick the box that requires users to register before leaving a comment. You don’t want to discourage people from leaving comments on your blog. To protect these forms, you can use a popular Wordpress plugin known as Akismet.
Spam is a nuisance to internet users. Spammers are constantly devising ways to get hold of user email addresse. It is imperative that we take every precaution to ward off the danger posed by spam.
