Teaching your parents about spam

It might take some time and effort to protect your privacy online, but it is undeniably worth it. If you fail to take the necessary steps, you might have to face severe consequences. Those that are careless about online privacy might fall victim to identity theft as well as fraud. They might also unwillingly expose members of their family to sexual predators or cyber bullies.

First of all, it is important that you ensure your computer is equipped with up-to-date security software. Firewall, anti spy ware and anti virus software are essential to keeping spam problems in check. Also, phishing filters and spam filters ensure that your online privacy is protected. These help to block damaging spam emails and also detect and eliminate very kind of malicious software that might be present in these emails.

Teach your parents to be very careful about sharing any kind of personal or financial details over the internet. Tell them that the best way to counter spam is to delete all the junk mails without opening any of them. Show them how easy it is to identify junk emails. These generally contain advertisements to buy products, congratulations letters from fabricated contests and emails that are too good to be true. The titles typically mislead you into opening the infringing emails. The emails might also dupe you into sharing your personal information online, something that can lead to serious problems.

It is also important to educate your parents about phishing scams. These are even more devious. These scams use fraudulent mails that appear to have been sent by some credit card company or bank. These emails typically ask you to update your personal information. Always ask your parents to go to the company website and log in instead of clicking on the links in the body of such emails.

Tell your parents to be wary of any attachments that come with emails. These might come loaded with software that might cause damage to your computer. Also, it is important to have strong passwords to render your email account more tamper-proof. Make sure your parents read the privacy policy of a website before they engage in online shopping or other transactions with a particular site.
