Jeanson James Ancheta was recently sentence to 57 months in federal prison for seizing control of 400,000 computers using malicious software and then selling access to the “zombies” to other hackers and spammers. Twenty-one year old Ancheta is a notorious member of, “Botmaster Underground,” and his conviction marked the first federal prosecution for generating financial gain from his particular hacking and spamming methods, and the longest sentence handed down for the spreading of computer viruses. Ancheta constructed his botnet by infecting computers with a strain of the rxbot Trojan horse and rendering them zombies, compromised computers used to perform malicious tasks without the owners’ knowledge.
