Spam Email Charity Fraud Exploits Unsuspecting Donors June 03, 2008
In the wake of the devastating earthquake in China and the horrifying cyclone in Burma, a hosted email protection service and other forms of spam control have unfortunately become an even greater necessity. Inboxes are being targeted, under the fraudulent guise of charitable organizations, as a means to exploit the desire of many people to donate money to such urgent causes. Although charity fraud is not a new innovation, in the past it revolved around telephones, snail mail, or even door to door collections. Today, fraudsters are employing the burgeoning technique of spam to cheat both the donors, and those in desperate needs of funds, out of money. This shift to online trickery necessitates enterprise-class anti spam email filters along with other internet security services offered by Perimetec Solutions and Barracuda Networks. Charity fraud is also used to steal personal and financial details through malware, and to transform unsuspecting people’s computers into zombies designed to flood cyberspace with spam. The Barracuda Spam Firewall, as well as other methods of spam, is integral to the protection of today’s computers. The FBI has issued an alert in regards to the online charity fraud following these natural disasters, with the majority of spam activity being reported out of China. In order to be protected from this deceitful social engineering ploy, one should make an effort to donate directly to a reputable organization and to arm his or her computer with appropriate anti spam products. Perimetec Solutions, in collaboration with Barracuda Networks, provides corporate networks with the high quality security they need by eliminating phishing attacks, data theft and viruses at affordable prices.
