Monty Python’s Graham Chapman: The Original Mrs. Anti-Spam
Did you ever wonder how unsolicited bulk emails, selling you everything from Viagra to Stock Tips, got named after a canned luncheon meat? Many believe the term was born from this 1970’s Monty Python sketch where Graham Chapman, dressed as a woman no less, sparks the world’s first anti-spam protest.
Ten years later the term “spamming” was used to describe users who would abuse online chat forums, multi-user domains (MUD), and bulletin board systems (BBS). They would repeat the word “SPAM” a ridiculous number of times, bullying other users’ texts off the computer screen. These “spammers” would flood chat rooms with quotes from the hilarious Monty Python sketch, spamming newcomers out of the conversations.
The famous sketch spawned an entire generation of both pro and anti-spam humour, not hard to believe considering the word itself is a punch line. Here are some great videos from the wonderful world of spam.
