Research has shown that as much as 80% of all spam email sent throughout the United States and Europe can actually be traced to less than 200 individual professional spammers. However, the majority of the world’s spam actually comes from the continent of Asia. One of the reasons for this is the lack of spam laws in place.
Another very popular locale for spammers is Nigeria. Spammers from this country are responsible for developing the online scam known as 419 spam or the Nigerian Bank/Letter Fraud scheme, which has already stolen millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims via the internet. Though Nigerian officials have started pursuing these cases, variations of this scam have already caught on amongst spammers in the United States and other parts of the world, as well. Governments are now trying their best to improve the laws and find real anti spam solutions.
In reality, there are many countries that have very little or no spam laws in place – a practice that is completely unacceptable in today’s age of technology. With spammers becoming more sophisticated, and with some of them even committing cyber crimes such as identity theft or credit card fraud, it is of the utmost importance that every country establishes their own set of laws regarding responsible internet use and online spam. Until that happens, the general online public is going to continue receiving spam with no end in sight. As the countries that do have spam laws in place cannot go after these foreign spammers, they will continue to run rampant on the internet and fill our inboxes with unsolicited commercial e-mail. |
