With the introduction of email services to mankind came the problem of spam emails. While email made available a fast way to communicate, there was also the menace of junk emails to contend with. Spam has assumed huge proportions in the past few years. It is estimated that billions of junk emails are sent to internet users everyday. These junk emails, apart from promoting goods and services, also carry viruses that can threaten the well-being of your computer. It is reported that businesses spend billions of dollars every year to reverse damage wrought about their network by spam. Individuals, companies and governments have been up in arms against the spread of spam in the internet.
The CAN-SPAM Act is a government initiative to curb the growing menace of junk emails and other forms of spam. The act contains the government's directive to stop spam on the internet. It lists specific requirements that must be abided by when attempting to distribute commercial emails. There are fines and penalties that are levied when the rules of the act are violated. The act specifically indicates that the heading as well as subject line of the email must be truthful and in no way misleading. Also, the ‘to’ and ‘from’ address line must be accurate. The subject line must be about the content of the email.
The act also states that there must be a provision in the email which would allow the subscriber to unsubscribe within a stipulated time period. This can be done by including a link in the email that allows people to unsubscribe. The commercial emails that you send must include your postal address as well.
The law also stipulates that you cannot collect email addresses from third-party web sites and then proceed to spam them. The act prevents you from employing the help of automated tools to conjure random email addresses and thereafter spamming them to determine their authenticity. You also cannot use any automated tool to sign up with different accounts that are there and then used to distribute spam emails. The act prohibits people from using another person's computer to send emails without the knowledge and consent of the user.
It is imperative that every internet user complies with the provisions in the CAN-SPAM Act. There are fines in place and anyone violating the law can be prosecuted.
