If you own and operate your own personal blog online, you probably already know how big of a problem spam can be. Receiving unwanted junk mail in your own inbox is one thing, but it’s a completely different matter when spammers are posting the spam messages directly on your blog for the entire public to see. And in the end, you are responsible for anything that is posted on your blog – whether you actually put it there or not. That is why it’s so important to delete these spam comments as soon as you see them, and to ban any known spammers once they are discovered or get an effective anti spam server.
However, scanning your blog constantly and protecting it from spam on your own really can be a full time job – especially for some of the bigger, more popular blogs out there. Fortunately there a few things you can look for in order to help tell if a blog comment is spam.
- Posts that contain nothing but links. Spammers will often do this in hopes that your blog users will be curious about the links, and ultimately click on one.
- Messages with many misspelled words. Because spam filters are constantly scanning messages and comments for any commonly used spam phrases, spammers have found a way around them by misspelling words just slightly. These typos are often the only way around the spam filters most blog networks have in place.
- Several posts in quick succession from the same user. Even if these posts don’t look like spam, it could be a spammer testing out your blog for a future spam campaign. Make sure to keep an eye on this. |
