What is an anti-spam firewall?

It has been reported that only one out of ten emails that are received are legitimate. This is an extremely discouraging fact that really puts into perspective how much of a hand we have on spam. This signifies the time and space that is lost to junk emails. Today zombies, trojans and viruses provide the greatest threat to computer networks. Spammers send out large numbers of junk emails containing product descriptions or sales copy to enable them to generate large sales volume with minimal marketing costs. Spam emails hog computer resources and thus cause computers to run slower than usual. It is necessary that you scan possibly infected computers and remove any spy ware that you might find there.

It is of paramount importance that your computer be equipped with an anti-spam firewall to prevent these unwanted emails from invading your inbox. When you do not use an anti-spam firewall your computer runs the risk of getting harmed. At times the spammers might use your computer to send junk emails. This further endangers your computer.

A firewall is essentially a barrier between your computer and the outside world. The firewall scrutinizes the traffic that your computer sends and receives. It will only allow authorized traffic to come in (traffic that is listed on the allowed list of traffic destinations). The traffic is thus monitored and this protects your computer from any potential harm. Most computer systems come equipped with anti-spam firewalls in order to protect the computer from viruses, worms, trojans, and a lot of other threats.

There are both hardware and software firewalls that available. A hardware firewall is a separate device altogether that is positioned between the computer and the outside world. When the outside world replies to a request made by your computer, it will be reviewed by the firewall before it is passed. The incoming mails route through the spam firewall that examines the messages for traces of spam. This keeps infected spam email from entering your computer. Hardware firewalls are typically reserved for business environments.

A software firewall, on the other hand, reviews the requests that are made on the software level. The hardware firewall has an edge in that it reviews the traffic before it reaches the computer. This provides more protection than the software firewall. Also, the hardware firewall can protect a number of other computers as well. Both the software work to offer protection to the computer from the outside world.
